Many women who have had their tubes tied end up wanting another baby. They usually end up looking at a tubal reversal or IVF. Here are a few questions that are usually asked before deciding to go through with a tubal reversal.
1 - One question that gets asked comes after talking to your doctor about wanting to have another baby. It's usually some variation of my doctor hasn't heard of tubal reversals but is pushing IVF. Why? The short answer may be that he is either working with outdated information, or if he went through medical training in the last couple decades, he may have never even seen a tubal reversal surgery. And you know that if you aren't trained in it, it must not exist, right? After IVF came along it became the treatment of choice. Take a look at the next question and I think you will understand why.
2 - What are the cost and success rates of tubal reversal vs. IVF? Most doctors say to expect to need an average of 3 cycles of IVF at an average cost of $10,000 to $12,000 per cycle. Each cycle has a success rate of 10 to 30% and it depends upon the number of eggs implanted with the inherent problems to that. That doesn't even consider what IVF cycles do to your body. However, a tubal reversal averages $8,000 to $9,000 for a one time surgery. The best and most experienced tubal reversal doctor charges less than that. And the success rate averages 69% but that's from that doctor's website. You need to know what your surgeon's rates are.
3 - Does my age matter? Yes, age does matter. Even without having had your tubes tied, the older you get, the harder it is to have a baby. After 35 there starts to be some decline and after 40, it starts getting dicey. So, your age does matter in your chances. You can check at the statistics here - http://news.tubal-reversal.net/pregnancy-study-2007-pregnancy_rates.htm - to see how age affects outcome for the leading tubal reversal doctor in the U.S.
4 - Will how long it's been since the tubal ligation matter? It matters in where that length of time puts you on the age scale. Take a look at the last question and you should see what I mean. Does the time put you over 40? Yes, then your chances are less than if it keeps you under 30.
5 - How long does the surgery take? It will depend upon the surgeon's skill, experience, training, how many he has done and the way he does the surgery. You could have a doctor that has done this maybe three times in the last four years or you could get a doctor that does it four times a day, five days a week like Dr. Berger. The first can take several hours due to lack of experience. The longer you are under anesthesia, the more potential problems and harder recovery you will have. Or with Dr. Berger, the surgery will be done in about an hour. You will be back home or in your hotel room just a couple hours later.
6 - What else does the doctor do? If you hadn't asked this question it may be one you want to consider asking. First off, if he does IVF, you will probably find that being pushed. Take a look at questions 1 and 2 above and think about why else he is pushing it. In addition, if your surgeon has his surgical time split doing, say, vasectomy reversals as well, then how much experience does he really have doing tubal reversals. If you select a doctor who does tubal reversals and nothing else, you will find a doctor who has probably seen just about everything under the sun and who has the best chance to help you.
There are more questions but this article is long enough. Get the answers to these questions for yourself. Then you can decide if IVF or tubal reversal is best for you. You can also decide which surgeon will be best to go with as well.
