A recent article entitled "I Can't Divorce My Wife, She Keeps My Blood Sugar Level Low" appeared in newspapers. It's a funny headline, backed by a growing body of evidence.

Yes, that 'old ball and chain' you married decades ago, may be the reason you're still six feet above ground.

According to a study conducted at the University of Southern California, men aged 52-66 had a higher incidence of normal blood sugar levels if they were married. The healthier males were believed to have lower blood sugar scores because their spouses "helped them maintain a healthier lifestyle and curtail detrimental habits."

Stress, anger, frustration and other negative emotions, typically associated with Type A personalities, are moderated in marriage, leading to healthy blood sugar levels.

These findings, linking emotions and blood sugar health are supported by Richard S. Surwit PhD in his book, The Mind Body Diabetes Revolution: A Proven New Program for Better Blood Sugar Control.

"…Controlling stress can have a huge impact on blood sugar levels…even simple stress reduction techniques can have meaningful effects in people with diabetes."

Surwit calls stress, anger and and depression "blood sugar boosters" because trigger hormones that tell the liver to release sugar into the blood.

According to the author, despite many diabetics adhering to a strictly healthy regimen of low fat, low sodium, low sugar diets, daily regimens of moderate exercising and following prescribed medications from their doctors, they are still struggling to keep blood sugar levels in check.

Research is still ongoing into the relationship between stress and blood sugar levels, but it appears to hold promise as part of an overall blood sugar control program.

Dr.Surwit describes stress control as "the important final ingredient to your blood sugar control arsenal."

Among the stress reduction techniques recommended are muscle relaxation techniques to reduce stress symptoms, which also includes breathing and visualization methods.

He also recommends behavior therapy for depression and hostility, replacing them with positive thoughts and actions.

"These techniques (have) been shown in over 50 years of research to reduce circulating stress hormones", Surwit concludes, "and will produce a clinically significant change in blood sugar in most people."

Long term relationships, including marriage, friendships, even pet ownership, have proven in other studies to provide healthier lives, lowered disease or illnesses and longevity.

So the next time you consider the single life, take a closer look at your old ball and chain. She may be lowering your blood sugar level and saving your life.
