Docusate is a stool softener. It makes stools softer and easier to pass. All these products soften stool to make bowel movements easier, thus easing constipation and painful straining.

Colace Dosage

* For adults and children 12 and older, The usual starting dosage is 50 to 200 milligrams daily.
* For children under 12, the usual starting dosage is 40 to 120 milligrams.

Uses of Colace

* It is used to treat constipation.
* It may also be used to treats other medical conditions those are listed in this medication guide.

Side Effects of Colace

This medication may cause stomach ache, cramping or irritated throat (liquid and syrup forms). If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you experience: skin rash, rectal bleeding, lack of bowel movements. Frequent use of laxatives can cause dehydration and loss of essential nutrients. Symptoms include :

* Muscle cramps
* Muscle weakness or dizziness

Maintain an adequate fluid intake while using this medication. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Warnings and precautions before taking Colace:

If you notice bleeding from the rectum or fail to have a bowel movement after using one of these products, stop taking it and check with your doctor. Do not use any of these products for more than 1 week unless your doctor approves.

Throat irritation and nausea are rare side effects, usually seen only with the liquid and syrup. Rash is also a remote possibility.

* Before taking docusate, you should tell your doctor if you are allergic to it; or if you have any other allergies.
* You should tell your doctor your medical history.
* You should be used this medication only when clearly needed during pregnancy.

Drug Interaction :- This drug is not recommended for use with mineral oil. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: aspirin.

If you are taking Colace with certain other drugs, then the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. So it is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Colace with the following:

* Any prescription medicines
* Aspirin or products that contain aspirin
* Mineral oil

Overdose

After taken Colace if you feel that overdose is suspected, then you should contact with your doctor immediately. Because it may lead to another serious effect. Symptoms of a Colace overdose include

* Nausea
* Vomiting or stomach pain
