Teaching children patience is not impossible. We first teach our children to be impatient inadvertently by supplying their every need when they are babies. When your baby cries it is for a reason. But the child grows older, now what? Here are 6 ideas to help you. 1. Bad behavior. After a child can use a few words do not give into them when they just cry. When your child was born they did not know how to talk and crying was necessary when they were hungry or uncomfortable. However, after your child starts to talk you need to encourage them to use words when they want something. 2. Set an example. I have to sit back and analyze times during my day when I am not showing patience. Perhaps you know what I mean. For me when I watch television I become very impatient with my children if they are causing a disturbance. I find though, that if I stay calm and let them know that either they stop making noise or they leave the room that I have better results. 3. Acknowledge patient behavior. Take notice when your child does show patience. Perhaps they are waiting for you to do something before they ask their question. Tell them how proud you are of them. Thank them for being so patient. 4. Too fast? Life goes by so quickly and we try to pack as much as we can into each day. Try setting some time aside each day where you and your children do something quiet. Turn off the television and just enjoy being together. 5. Board games. Board games are a good way to teach patience because you have to wait your turn. This will be hard for a child at first but do not give up. The first couple of times you play you might have to put the game a way but your child will catch on that it is fun and they will become more patient. 6. Baking. Bake something with your child. Make sure the finished product is a cookie or piece of cake. Explain to them that the time it takes to cook is worth it because it tastes so much better cooked. Patience can be learned from example and activities. Games, cooking and slowing down help your children see the value in being patient.
