The term chelete was first used by Dr, Gilbert T Morgan in 1920. The literal meaning of this term is derived from the Greek word chele means claw of a lobster. It works like a caliper to grab something. But the systematization of the chelation theory was done by French- Swiss chemist Alfred Werner. He propounded the theory of coordination of compounds which is known as chelates. He explained the theory that how metals com together to form organic molecules. It became the foundation of chelation chemistry.

This theory was followed by the industrial production of EDTA chelation in 1920s. It was in 1930 that EDTA was invented in Germany. After that this product gained popularity and came in the global market for selling. Till then application of EDTA for treatment was not considered. But in the 1st world war British soldiers had to suffer from poison gas. It was a shot in the arm for the application of the principles of chelation compounds.

Researchers in Britain invented their own chelation substances for the purpose of treatment of metal poisoning. In the Second World War there was a fear of atomic war and so America started making its own version of EDTA that was proved more effective then the British chelation substances. But the first medicinal application of chelating agents was done only in 1947 by Dr. Charles of the Georgetown University. He successfully used EDTA for the treatment of a patient having toxic nickel in his body. But for some years the medical use of EDTA was very limited. It was in 1960 that the chelating agents were successfully used for the patients of lead poisoning. These patients were working in a plant involved in the production of battery.

Later US navy started using chelation for those who had acquired lead poisoning while repairing old ships. In these cases both the patients of lead poisoning and atherosclerosis were greatly benefited by this therapy. Later the medicinal uses of chelating agents were extended to the patients of memory loss, arthritis and chest pain. From 1950 and onwards the medical use of chelating agents became more frequent. And thus it got wide medical applications. In 1973 the use of chelation for cardiovascular disease was emphasized by American Academy of Medical preventics.

In 1983 a board was formed for testing the efficacy of this therapy. It was followed by the FDA approval of chelation therapy making its medical application legal. This therapy was used for coronary artery diseases. Today at least 5 to 10 million people consult doctors for chelation treatment.
