The new British team coach, Fabio Capello stated to the press that he would not include David Beckham for the next friendly English game against Switzerland next week.

Capello will unveil the final names of the twenty-two members of the English team on Saturday, and Beckham’s name is not expected among them.

Capello will speak to Beckham during the week before finally deciding, but he has explained in private the player is not in full physical shape, since he has not played a competitive game since last November. Nevertheless, Capello has not closed completely the doors to the international career of the former England's captain and current player of the Los Angeles Galaxy, and believes Beckham can help the English team to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Championship.

The 32 years-old Briton should play his 100th national team game against Switzerland, but Capello will not make his final decision based on sentimental reasons but rational and cold moves.

Capello has been seen favorably impressed by Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon and Blackburn’s David Bentley; Capello believes any of them would have a better performance than Beckham, despite their previous bound Coach-Player at the Santiago Bernabéu.

At present, Capello is convinced the player needs to improve his shape but according to some sources close to the coach, he does not believe Beckham could be ready despite it is only a friendly game.

The fact of leaving Beckham aside sends a clear message that he has begun a new phase in the English team. Capello has insisted that neither Trevor Brooking, Football Association development director or neither Brian Barwick, executive director, do have anything to say regarding the players’ selection.

Many other including Alex Ferguson hope Capello would change his mind and would include Beckham in the English team. "To deny him a game (with the national team) when he has already played ninety-nine would not be good", said Ferguson.

Previously, Capello’s predecessor, Steve McLaren, had excluded Beckham but he returned to the team after an absence of eleven months. The former England's captain trusts he will be able to play his 100th game and be included among the international players’ elite Peter Shilton, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Billy.
