Cable generally provides 3mbps to 10mbps in connection speeds, cable is considered as 3-4 times faster than DSL, however the cost can range from $40-$50 per month.

Cable is considered more expensive than DSL. DSL must have a dedicated phone line, you don't want any interference with your phone or from other internet users in the area.

Cable is faster than DSL, cable covers more areas than DSL and distance doesn't affect connections.

DSL as we have covered is slower than cable and it's coverage is more limited, the further you live away from your phone companies facility the worse your internet connection will be.

Cable is more expensive than DSL, the connection speeds can be negatively affected by the amount of internet users online in your local area.

Finally consider this, if you are just reading plain emails, dialup will be all you require. If you browse a lot of websites and download large files, then either DSL or cable internet should be your next option. If you are well located, near a phone company centre, DSL may be the most cost efficient option and is clearly a step up from dial-up.
