The picture frame has many different uses all working towards to same goal, displaying a picture. One use is to hang a picture to a wall; another is to enhance the picture itself visually. Wood and metal have been most notoriously used over the years but more extravagant frames have been made from all sorts of things including sea shells. Electronic and digital picture frames have most recently been used to enhance picture frames. Picture frames original use was to support and protect paintings that they wished to hang on walls. Instead of puncturing the work of art with a nail or screw, the painting could be preserved by putting four wooden borders around it and nailing that to the wall. Protecting the picture is another great use of the picture frame. A sheet of glass can be put over the picture and between the frame's four borders. Plexiglas has replaced glass in most cases today. This is all done in order to prevent insects from landing on and damaging the picture. It also keeps dust and other airborne things from harming the picture. Finally people are kept away from the surface of the painting by the glass. The picture frame has another great use other than safe guarding and supporting the picture it holds. It also attributes to its beauty. The frame itself could be considered a work of art. Artists who enjoy expressing themselves through woodcarving have made magnificent picture frames by carving designs in to the wood. Metal workers can do the same by molding the metal into designs making lovely borders for the pictures they surround. Today not all pictures are used to house beautiful works of art. They are used with our family portraits, baby pictures, and baseball team photographs. At first the picture frames that were used to hold these types of pictures could only be plain wood or metal. The average person would not want to buy a hand crafted frame for a picture that they would merely hang on their wall. With modern technological advancements the picture frame has greatly changed in the modern household. Electronics have been added to the frames, allowing light bulbs to be put inside. A person's favorite Christmas picture can be displayed with red and green colors around the outside. The newest advancement in the picture frame industry is the use of digital picture frames. With these picture frames you do not even physically require a picture to be held within it. These picture frames take a digital picture taken from a person's personal digital camera and display it on the screen held inside the frame. Some of these frames can display pictures as a slideshow. This means that they can take several pictures and slowly rotate through which ones are shown on the screen at a particular time. It would take dozens of normal picture frames to display the amount that a single digital frame can. MP3 audio files can be stored inside the digital frames allowing a person to hear music while the see look at the picture. Some people might say these factors would make the digital frames superior to traditional ones, while others argue it is not comparable because you do not actually get to look at the picture, just its image on a screen. These things are for the consumer to decide, they can say which will meet their needs and their visual preferences.
