When you are trying to find the right name to call your new dog you can select about any one you want. In fact there are hundreds even thousands of different names a dog owner can choose from, but at the end of the day it should be one that is suited to their particular dog. In this article we provide you with a number of guidelines which should help choosing the right name for your dog much easier. Although the name you choose may suit your dog it certainly may not suit another. But through the points below you should be able to select a name that suits your dog perfectly.

1. It is important that when selecting a name for your dog you go for one that is not only easy to say but pronounce as well. If you choose a name which your dog finds difficult to understand when you say it just imagine how difficult you will find it to train them. Therefore select a name that is not only easy to say and once it has chosen and you have got your dog at home you need repeat it over and over again each day. Also by selecting a name that is difficult to pronounce or say will make those times when you are trying to maintain control over your dog much more difficult and stressful.

2. It is crucial when selecting your dog's name you never give them more than one. Unlike humans dog's become easily confused if their names are long or they have more than one. Dog's that are confused because of the name or names they are being called may well be more difficult to train and handle. But by sticking to just one name say for example "Lady" will not confuse the dog because they will find it much easier to remember.

3. Avoid choosing a name which is more like a command say for example heel or jump. Not only will you find training them more difficult as they will find it difficult knowing what are the commands that they should be responding to and what is their name. They will find it even more difficult as they will become very confused over what is their name and what is a command.

4. It is best that you choose a name which contains one or two syllables. We have a number of dogs all we short and easy to remember names including Taz, Heff, Jack and Jodie. Plus choosing names that contain one or two syllables actually makes it much easier for the dog to learn.

5. Never select a name for your dog that has a negative meaning to it. Unfortunately when you say such names you may well find that the tone it is said in is negative also. Remember it won't just be you calling them there may be others as well.

6. Do not give your dog a name which is embarrassing or is considered to be politically incorrect. Unfortunately there are still people around who think that because their dog is black they are quite within their rights to call it "Nigger", but this is just not the case. Plus dog's are quickly able to pick up on any negative feelings a person is having when calling a particular name and are far less likely to respond.

7. Now you have chosen your dog's name and you have been using it for some time then don't suddenly change it for something else. This will only leave your dog in a complete state of confusion and will find it very difficult to respond to you as they will not actually know that it is them that you are calling. So choose your dog's name wisely and once chosen you will need to stick to it.

When choosing a name for your dog don't just sit down and make a list instead make it as much fun as possible and get everybody involved who will have regular contact with the animal. This is even more important if the dog will become a family pet and so become a member of your family. Yet through the use of the guidelines above you should find choosing a name for your dog much easier than you thought and you may even come up with some thing that is completely unique.
