It's that time of year, again, and Christmas is fast approaching. For most families, the holiday season is the busiest time of the year. It's the time of year for parties and celebrations, family gatherings and school pageants, and of course, shopping and wrapping.
It's the time of year young children look forward to the most, with tales of Santa Claus riding through the Christmas Eve sky on his reindeer-driven sleigh, on his way to deliver toys to all the homes in the land. But while it may be a joyous season for all, there are a few tips that parents of young children should consider, to ensure everyone has a safe season.
Fortunately, the dangers of fire, associated with Christmas trees, have been well- publicized, and modern holiday consumers can now purchase lights and trees which are safer than ever before.
But, when young children are present, fire isn't the only possible danger around the Christmas tree. Shiny, colorful ornaments, hanging off a tree's branches, can be kid magnets. And it doesn't take a lot of effort for a tiny tot, yanking an ornament, to pull a Christmas tree over. Parents should make sure that ornaments are high enough to be out of reach of their little ones' fingers.
The use of strands of light to decorate is a common holiday practice in most homes. Parents should take care to keep power strips and extra electrical cords up, off of the floor. Light strands should be turned off, except when parents can be in the same room with children, to monitor their activity.
Many families love to decorate their homes with live holiday plants, during the Christmas season. But, did you know that many of the most familiar holiday plants contain substances that are poisonous, when swallowed? When little children are present, it's best to use realistic-looking artificial plants as decorations.
Like most families, you and yours will probably attend at least one party or family gathering in someone else's home, during this time of year. If the hosts don't have small children of their own, their home may not be well-suited for the presence of little revelers, running around. It's always best to ask ahead of time, and if the location of the get-together isn't used to the presence of young kids, then either finding a babysitter for yours, or keeping a close eye on them at the party, is necessary.
The holiday season is a wonderful time of year. But for parents of small children, getting through it can seem like running a marathon. Observing a few safety measures can make the race a little less stressful.
